Handsome Things turns 1.

Today, a year ago I posted a small, sad looking post with a message that read, “Welcome to Handsome Things. We hope to bring you some of the best design, art and handmade wonders from around Mzanzi.

I didn’t really know what I was doing. I didn’t know how to link a website, how to enlarge pictures, how to link to Twitter and I even had to email Kirsty at www.minttheshop.com, who had the same WordPress theme as me, and ask her how to put a Facebook button in the sidebar. It was quite an awkward email that went something like this – Hi, you don’t know me, but I’d like to feature your shop and I also need some WordPress advice.

My biggest fear was that I’d run out of people to feature and a year later I can safely say that there are so many talented South Africans that, if I had more time, I’d be able to feature a person every day of the week.

I still don’t know what I’m doing. I know an experienced blogger would’ve lined up a fabulous birthday give-away and I would know what UB and PI values were when people enquire about them and I would have a rate card.  So I’m still pretty much fumbling/googling my way through this.

But what I do know is that nothing beats getting an email from a person I’ve featured and having them tell me how the post has generated buzz or increased their website traffic or sales. That’s what this is all about.

If this blog was a reality show it would be South Africa’s got Talent. Mind-blowing talent. And I’m proud to be able to show you a tiny part of it.

  1. Thanks for Hansome Things, for its ever present inspirations, and yes, thanks for featuring our colouring book, it has helped us a lot! from all of us at Colour Africa Proverbs

  2. Happy blogbirthday! Though I’m neither South African (Canadian, actually) nor living in South Africa (South Korea, actually), I always enjoy your posts and feel honoured to get a glimpse at the immensely talented artistic side of SA.

  3. Yaaay! Happy First Anniversary Birthday! Have loved seeing all the handsome people and their handsome work on your very handsome blog. Well done Hanneke, I am always interested, inspired and delighted by the makers and creators that you feature.
