Absa L’atelier

Last week my husband I attended the Absa L’Atelier awards evening in downtown Jozi. I’m sure most of you in the art world know about the competition, but for those who don’t the Absa L’Atelier is South Africa’s most prestigious art competition and is held annually for artists between ages 21 and 35. This award not only ensures South Africa’s emerging artists of recognition, but also affords them the opportunity to develop their talents abroad. The winner gets R125 000 and a six month art residency in Paris. Pretty sweet.

You can read more about this year’s winners here and you can also watch a beautiful and inspirational documentary by Hennie van Deventer on last year’s winner here.

  1. I’m very very impressed! It feels like each of these art pieces communicates with me. The 1st one of the guy with the eye is PURE talent. The pigs head and the watercolour portrait shows a lot of control and understanding of form. If only I knew it would’ve been this good I would’ve gone too.
