I’ve been a fan of Haidee Nel‘s beautiful work for a while now. If you’re in Cape Town you can see a selection of her work on view at the Cape Town Art Fair from 26 Feb – 1 March. The Hare, The Fox, The Hummingbird, The Lion, The Crocodile & Die Bokkie.
“Sculptor and performance artist Haidee Nel started her career by constructing and distributing pairs of wire-and-fur ears to art festival audiences. She was intrigued by the way in which her work brought people closer to their animal selves. These wearable artworks served as a tool for the shedding of social masks and a return to child-like innocence – an experience that reminds people of their ever-present intrinsic potential to become anything that they desire. The notion that thoughts have a direct effect on our perception and experience of the world was what inspired Nel to move towards creating live, interactive human sculptures and eventually develop her own series of masked child characters that have gained recognition worldwide.” – Erdmann Contemporary
